Blind Rivets are multi-piece rivet assemblies, (rivet body and mandrel), which are inserted into the application hole, however, the backside of the application isn't viewable, therefore blind. Blind Rivets are capable of being installed from one side of the application, while the other or backside is not visible. Traditionally, blind rivets were used on aircraft leading edges, trailing edges, and close out areas which are limited to access to one side of the structure. Current blind rivet usage has expanded to many additional areas of the aircraft in an effort to decrease labor expense and to address the ergonomic issues of solid riveting. Applications for blind rivets are endless with: Race Cars, Trucks, Trailers, RV's, Motor homes, NASCAR racecars, signs, HVAC, and metal cabinets.

How Blind Rivets Work

A blind rivet consist of two parts: the rivet body and, and the setting mandrel. As shown in the accompanying illustration at below:

• The rivet assembly is inserted in a hole in the materials to be joined.

• The rivet tool sometimes known as a rivet gun is actuated and the jaws of the power-operated or manual rivet tool grip the mandrel of the rivet.

• The rivet is set by pulling the mandrel head into the rivet body, expanding it, and forming a strong, tight, reliable joint. At a predetermined setting force, the mandrel breaks and falls away.
